"The systems that you and your team have implemented in the [Fanny Allen Hospital] are stellar... With the professional accountability intertwined into your services, I can count on your team being there for issues, equipment problems, and a whole myriad of things that happen in a project, especially in the complicated world of healthcare."
—Robert Cummings, Interim Manager, ACF (Fletcher Allen Health Care)

Bonhag Associates has completed a number of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, instrumentation and fire protection engineering and designs throughout the region for the industrial, healthcare, building, and process manufacturing arenas. Our expertise in the state of the art systems currently available adds quality and value to the design of each individual system that we design for our clients. We achieve proper design through the optimum integration of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and process systems, which is key to lower energy and operating costs for our clients. Wayne T. Bonhag, P.E., is a registered professional mechanical engineer as well as a professional electrical engineer. This breadth of knowledge is reflected on each of our projects.

Through innovative approaches Bonhag Associates incorporates value into each of our client's projects, thus either lowering the facility operating costs, improving the efficiency, improving the indoor air quality (IAQ), or reducing the capital costs of the proposed project. We have a track record of listening well to our clients and then approaching them with questions about methods to reach the best solution based on new technological advances. Brainstorming is a real asset to the type of high technology projects that we provide, opening the opportunity for unique results for our clients, which is complemented by our team approach.

The following are examples of some of the projects that required creative solutions to achieve the client's requested results:

    Innovative Design Depicted in Photos
  • Computer Room Facility: Designed a new computer room facility (17,000 square feet) utilizing as much of the existing structure and existing system as possible in order to lower the construction cost per square foot.

  • Hospital/Healthcare:

    • Revised the HVAC for the operating room suite, using knowledge of the renovation to the facility to optimize the systems where appropriate. Assisted with scheduling the work so that Operating Rooms would not be out of service and the proper systems were installed. We allowed the phasing of the systems to occur in a manner that allowed preliminary relocations, pre-purchasing packages and construction packages to be presented in a timely manner. The systems were approved for DSM funding from the local utility.

    • Designed a new helicopter facility for a new hospital in the region. The effort was to design the hangar facilities and comply with all the latest codes. The building included the relative fire alarm, detection systems, grounding grids and pockets and lightning protection required for this type of facility.

    • Reviewed the water supply to the hospital complex to meet sprinkler and water requirements per JCAHO requirements.

    • Provided troubleshooting of the medical gas requirements for a hospital including individual rooms that required medical gas systems.

  • Hotel Facility: Provided oversight of all design disciplines for a national historic landmark hotel and restaurant which included architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, ADA, and historic reviews. In addition, the kitchens for the hotel were designed on two levels and a two-level pub were designed. The system that was selected for the historic building was a water source heat pump system because of space constraints. The water source heat pump system was also used for the fire sprinkler system as permitted by NFPA. The demolition of portions of the building allowed appropriate expansion for the new elevator and service core.

  • Manufacturing Facility: Designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection for an ASHRAE award-winning 85,000 square-foot facility, which reduced energy and saved the client construction capital outlay.

  • Office Buildings and Facilities:

    • Designed mechanical and electrical systems in a renovated office and laboratory facility.

    • Designed the energy conserving HVAC and plumbing systems for a 120,000 square foot multi-story office building with flexible fit-out.

    • Designed the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system for a three-story, 55,000 square-foot office complex.

  • Pharmaceutical Facility: Designed new Class 1,000 and 10,000 Clean Rooms.

  • Plastic Manufacturing Facility: Designed a new research and development facility for plastic molding of extruded needles and syringes, quality control, and sterilization.

  • Refrigerated Warehouse: Designed a new 85,000 square foot refrigerated warehouse for cooling pistachio nuts prior to packaging and shipment.

  • Telecommunications: Designed a state of the art Microwave Uplink/Downlink Satellite Facility, optimizing the use of energy, HVAC and heat recovery.

  • Assisted Living Facility: Provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services at several local facilities.

  • Assisted Care Facility: Improved the efficiency of the heating plant, lowered the overall operating costs for the facility. The reductions in operating costs allowed the project to proceed.

  • Healthcare Retirement Facility: Solved the problem of air conditioning units continually failing due to "oil slugging" as a result of improper refrigerant piping requirements. By using newer technologies, we were able to assist the Healthcare Group in applying a fix to the existing equipment, thereby eliminating the need to install a much more expensive chilled water system being considered.
